In pulp fiction circles, the name David Goodis is spoken reverentially and this trio of stories makes it clear why he is held in such regard by authors and readers alike. He is one of the crime writers who elevated the dime store paperback into an art form and Goodis did this by plumbing the depth of the human soul — perfect noir territory.

He is a master of the runaway story where characters have no control over spiralling events and are desperately seeking to keep their heads above water against seemingly insurmountable odds — these stories are good examples of that. One of the first thing that struck me about this collection is that the stories are a darker versions of the hard-boiled, noir image presented by Hollywood, the stories are well crafted but unvarnished.

These are the same mean streets under a brighter spotlight. Perhaps that is why he only ever completed a couple of screenplays, his bleak vision is not easily watered down brutal violence, rape and ingrained corruption. Goodis was a strange man, a loner with a tragic family history; a brother who died at the age of three from meningitis and another who suffered from mental illness all his life.

His first novel was published in , the second Dark Passage in , by which time he was in Hollywood Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall starred in the film version a year later. Goodis liked to spend his nights in the clubs and lived a kind of Walter Mitty existence Ollerman. He was never happy in Hollywood so he returned to Philadelphia, these stories are set in east coast cities. There was something dreary and stagnant in the way all this syrupy heat refused to budge.

The mood is set; late night, too hot to sleep, a city in decay, a man on the edge. Now Vanning has waking nightmares, images of driving on the open road, a car crash, a gun. He heads for the street and bumps into a guy smoking, they start chatting. The best conclusion they can come up with is:. Its clear that Vanning is a loner, but is he a bank robber and a killer? In a late night bar Vanning latches onto a girl, the attraction is instant, like they finally found each other, the new soul mates share a meal.

On the way home three guys jump Vanning, the Seattle crew that he gave the slip in Denver, they want the money. This is the story of Jim Cassidy and his wife Mildred and a cast of downbeat and beaten up characters. Jim Cassidy drives a bus route from Easton to Philadelphia for a small local company. A former war hero and airline pilot, the gods have chosen to bring him low — partly his own fault but mostly circumstances beyond his control.

This relationship is an obsession, but is it love? They get into another row, another fight. By the end of the night only Jim and new girl Doris are left in the bar. Jim moves in with Doris, he has a notion to save her, but neither Mildred or Haney are going to let things lie.

A fascinating portrait of the marginalised, the ugly truth about people in destructive relationships. A story loaded with false hopes and appalling behaviour. A pitiful and compassionate portrait of PTSD and trauma, of alcoholism and domestic abuse. All put out there not to be judged but to be understood. Doris is carrying a weight no person could bear, Jim and Mildred are toxic like a binary explosive, separate they are fine, mix them and BOOM!

And yet between them and their salt of the earth friends they may be the most loyal people around. This is the story of Corey Bradford, looking for something to get his life back on track. He witnesses a well-healed drunk getting mugged. They wave their guns around until Corey floors one and shoots the other. Before they can question the living guy, Rafer shoots him.

The cops see it as righteous but then Grogan is in with the captain of the 37th Precinct. Grogan wants to know who is after him and he wants Corey to find out. Meanwhile the Night Squad, a law unto themselves, also have their eye on Grogan. All Corey is thinking about is the money he can make out to Grogan. Each story is different but tough and cynical, loaded with cascading events and limited redemption.

Cleverly twisted plots, snappy dialogue, taut writing, each layer of misery will have you feeling for the characters stuck in a world of mistrust and missteps — more pain than anyone can handle and stay righteous and still standing upright. Insightful of human nature on the edge, and of the underbelly of the city. Your email address will not be published. Facebook Twitter Instagram Instagram 0 Items.
