It's a huge book and has pages. The book adopts a structured approach, starting with the study of proportion, body at rest and motion, followed by a more detailed look at the different parts of the body. The many More pictures on my blog Complete Guide to Life Drawing is an accessible guide to figure drawing. The many wonderful illustrated examples are supplemented by descriptive and insightful commentary. The pictures are from Gottfried Bammes and other Old Masters. There are also several helpful exercises to follow along.
While it's not strictly an anatomy reference book, there are still a lot of detailed drawings of the muscles, all properly labelled. It's a great book for beginners into figure drawing.
Aug 02, Erik rated it it was amazing. Brilliant book, the best of its kind I have ever come across. NOT a dry anatomy book at all. Beautifully illustrated and with insets from the greats. Highly recommended. I've been copying out selected drawings at random but there are also programmatic exercises. Herr Professor's own works strike me as a little too graphic and illustrative but that may be on purpose. Jul 15, Pat Loughery rated it really liked it Shelves: art-and-creativity , drawing-sketching-doodling , library.
A very well organized, detailed and structured guide to drawing the human anatomy. At this point it's way above my skill level, but this would be an excellent way to fill sketchbooks with figure studies for a serious student. Nov 24, Yelda Kullap added it. Jul 27, Kristine rated it really liked it Shelves: art-drawing. Bammes is amazing and his books are a must for every artist. You are introduced to so many different styles and approaches to figure drawing.

Complete Guide to Life Drawing
Complete Guide to Life Drawing [Paperback]
This book has been through nine editions over many decades in its native Germany, and has now finally been translated into English. The book aims to cover everything a figure drawing artist would need to know to understand anatomy, and to guide teachers to properly give anatomical instruction to their students. The book was sent to us by the publisher to review, but we will be absolutely honest about it. Learning about anatomy in order to better draw figures went out of fashion somehow towards the end of the last century, and many art schools neglect to teach the subject properly. This anatomy book has two huge strengths and one weakness. Bammes is not above providing useful simplifications of bones, muscles and other body parts. This really is anatomy for artists.
