It begins just before the Hundred Days period when Napoleon returned to power after his exile. The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness.

But I came to accept it in the end. The cruelty Edmond had shown in his unrelenting need for revenge was also apparent to Mercedes, and I believe both understood that the person they had fallen in love with how could he ever forgive her for that marriage choice? Time changes us all. What was the nature of the relationship between Eugenie Danglars and Louise d'Arnilly? Why did Louise agree to run away with Eugenie? Also, in what light did the author intend to portray Eugenie- was she a flaky feminist or a person actually striving to be independent?
