AL GHAZALI INCOHERENCE PHILOSOPHERS PDF

Don't have an account? The seventeenth discussion in al-Ghazali Incoherence of the Philosophers Tahafut al-falasifa has often been regarded as the locus classicus for an occasionalist critique of the concept of causality. For al-Ghazali, occasionalism is one possible explanation of what we witness with our senses. Yet secondary causality is also considered a possible explanation as long as it does not assume that any cause could stand on its own. All causes depend on other causes, which all go back to one single cause, namely God. This scenario is acceptable for al-Ghazali as long as the particular connection between cause and effect that we witness is not considered necessary.

Although Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali lived a relatively short life , he established himself as one of the most important thinkers in the history of Islam. The Incoherence of the Philosophers, written after more than a decade of travel and ascetic contemplation, contends that while such Muslim philosophers as Avicenna boasted of unassailable arguments on matters of theology and metaphysics, they could not deliver on their claims; moreover, many of their assertions represented disguised heresy and unbelief.

Despite its attempted refutation by the twelfth-century philosopher Ibn Rushd, al-Ghazali's work remains widely read and influential. Read more Read less.

This is an excellent volume for those interested in classical Islamic scholastic thought.

Thomas Aquinas was to Roman Catholic theological and philosophical thought. The translation is good, however I would not suggest this book to someone not already familiar with classical philosophical both Greek and Islamic arguments. For one already familiar with the writings and arguments of Plato, Aristotle, al-Farabi, and ibn Sina Avicenna , will find this book as an invaluable intellectual and philosophical source.

An excellent and thought-provoking treatise on Islamic philosophy compared with that of Greeks. Needs a lot of concentration and I recommend have a small sip each time to internalize the discussions by one of the most influential scholar and Great Imam of 11thth century. Hard to find academic text. Glad to track down and at a reasonable price. Not light reading. Three more words. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us. Shopbop Designer Fashion Brands.

Part of that strategy is his condemnations of three key teachings as unbelief and apostasy from Islam. He is the author of numerous articles on Islamic theology and philosophy. The Seventeenth Discussion of The Incoherence of the Philosophers

The text was dramatically successful, and marked a milestone in the ascendance of the Asharite school within Islamic philosophy and theological discourse. The book favors faith over philosophy in matters specifically concerning metaphysics or knowledge of the divine. In July , at the invitation of Nizam al-Mulk, Al-Ghazali became professor of law at the Nizamiyya of Baghdad , one of the most prestigious colleges at that time. This college was intended in part to train scholars to counter the religious propaganda of the Fatimid caliphs, and Al-Ghazali's appointment at the Nizamiyya was part of it. This book was a series of four theological works that he wrote during his tenure as professor of law at the Nizamiyya. This series clearly shows that Al-Ghazali did not refute all philosophical science as many scholars believe. Al-Ghazali stated that he did not find other branches of philosophy including physics, logic, astronomy or mathematics problematic, his only dispute was with metaphysics in which he claimed that the philosophers did not use the same tools, namely logic, which they used for other sciences.
