Instructor: Dawn Lehman E-mail: delehman u. CIVE is intended to provide senior-level undergraduates with the fundamental understanding of the behavior and design of reinforced concrete structures. The student is expected to be familiar with:. By the end of the course, you should have an understanding of the response behavior of some reinforced concrete elements e.

The course will primarily emphasize methods to design and analyze reinforced concrete elements. The last couple of weeks of the course will emphasize system design. The design methods will be developed and reviewed at the end through the design of a simple frame structure.

As you might guess, a lot of the class period will be devoted to lecture. This is a convenient and efficient method of transferring the information. This does not necessarily translate into learning. Other possibilities exist. Therefore, at times, and to the extent possible, we will use part of the class period to practice the material with exercises on the relevant course material. Certainly, the homework assignments are important to your learning. I encourage you to do them and get help if you do not understand them!

Both Curtis and I are happy to meet with you and although during our office hours is preferable, you are welcome to make alternative arrangements. If you specifically need help with the experiments, please contact me or Chris. In addition, I urge and welcome your participation and discussion in class. In this field there are many good questions and for some there is not a satisfactory answer.

Some of these are questions that you will continue to ponder in your professional life as well. One of the safest places to explore is in the classroom. One of the lessons of years of research in education is that for many of us, it is easier to remember something that you have experienced.

Although you will become familiar with the ACI code and its many requirements, you will probably not remember them in great detail. What is actually more important than remembering the number of the ACI provision for Shear design is remembering how a component, for example a beam, responds if it does not have adequate shear reinforcement. Previous students have found that the experiments are one of the most valuable portions of the class.

These are the basic ground rules. We will discuss them further. Chris will have primary responsibility for the experiments. We will test beams that are over-reinforced, under-reinforced, lightly reinforced, shear-critical 2 , and that have inadequate anchorage or a total of 6 beams.

Therefore, there will be 6 groups. Each group will be responsible for constructing a beam, predicting the response, testing the beam and writing up the results in a report that we will make available on the website website address to come. You must submit your report to me by the day of the final!

An electronic copy and hardcopy are required from each group. A portion of the last day of class will be used to discuss the experiments as well as a review for the final. Schedule is important. Concrete takes 28 days to cure. Therefore, we should aim to cast the specimens in Week 3 and test in Week 7. That will give you 3 weeks to complete your report.

More information to come! MacGregor, J.
